THIS ISN'T GEAR.
IT'S A PERSONALITY.

I already got my North Sea-proven sailing gear. I was looking for something different. Something to express my well-earned respect for the ocean when on land. Sailing the ocean is such a big part of me. I want people to know that. I wanted something that befriends other sailors and annoys landlubbers ;) That's why I created The Salty Dawg brand. A character with a few storms under his belt — someone very unimpressed with modern tech, who knows that humble seamanship is the only way to co-exist with the mighty force of the ocean. SAVED BY A MILITARY CHOPPER

I admit it. Sailing on Dec 1st in the cold Baltic Sea with snow on deck is never a good idea. Add a good Force 11 storm and you get a ripped main, a ripped jib, a failed engine and a cold and exhausted crew. The Coast Guard vessel had to turn around and ask a military helicopter for help.

CRASHED INTO SLEEPING WHALE

One minute just relaxing on deck, next the 20 ton Swan 46 is rocked. Rig shaking. Like we hit a rock. But we all know it’s 10,000 feet deep. We look aft and see the enormous outline of a whale. No water ingress. Rudder intact. It was four days since we last saw a ship. We had a sat phone. We could have called. But who could come?

CUTTING AWAY A WRAPPED SPINNAKER

With eight crew onboard, flying a spinnaker at night should be doable. Not so much. A squall hit us and all of a sudden we had 200sqm wrapped around the forestay flapping like a happy dog’s tail through the night. In the morning I went up the mast and down the forestay equipped with the boat’s sharpest knife; an IKEA fillet knife and cut the spinnaker loose.
